Our story starts in Northern Argentina on a cycle journey the length of the South American continent. Struggling hugely with the spikes and slumps in energy from coffee and sugar based drinks, Tom, our Founder, discovered yerba mate as a longer-lasting, more sustainable source of energy.
As soon as he got back home he teamed up with the world’s leading nutritionists and tea tasters to create Athletic Tea - the world’s first tea specifically blended to enhance athletic performance.
We tried over 500 blends of tea with the goal of creating a slow, steady release of energy for everyday athletes.
Keen to see if the new blends were effective, Tom attempted to run 17 marathons in under 12 days to set a new world record for the fastest crossing of Iceland.
Using slow-release energy blends in the morning, yerba performance blends throughout the day and rooibos recovery blends at night, he didn’t suffer from any crashes and noticed a marked improvement in comparison to taking traditional coffee and sugar-based energy drinks. We beat the record by two days and quickly went ahead with launch.
Since then, Athletic Tea Co. has supplied thousands of packs to everyday athletes and elite sports teams (including Champions league football clubs, the Welsh Rugby Union, Olympic level boxers and GB triathletes). Warming brews or ice cold refreshment on the go, our teas are suitable for anyone looking to make improvements in their everyday performance.
Cycling the Andes, all-day energy was needed.
Testing the energy teas, Iceland Day 5.
The end result: Athletic Tea Co.

"Yerba mate is so good for energy levels because it contains caffeine without the jittery side effects of a coffee. There is also good research on the Mission Tea burning fat, as it can help the body rely on fat for fuel during exercise. I would strongly recommend these products to any athlete or busy office worker."

“I always start the day with a cocoa + ginger - you can actually taste the chocolate and it provides a buzz without the crash! Cold matchas on the bike are great too. I love the philosophy of using less sugar for energy. We’re drinking far too much of it in energy drinks.”
